Counselling and psychotherapy, Person First

We meet you where you are, then walk with you through a clear, flexible pathway.

Clinical counselling at SJP Wellbeing is an evidence-based process delivered by practitioners who genuinely care about your progress. While general supportive counselling offers valuable emotional support, our approach goes deeper, combining informative assessments, personalised treatment planning, and reflective tracking to ensure your therapy is working and evolving with you.

We begin by taking the time to understand your full picture before establishing meaningful, measurable goals together. From there, your practitioner draws on a range of evidence-based approaches to address concerns including trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief, neurodevelopmental differences, and addiction.

For younger clients aged 10 and above, sessions may incorporate expressive modalities including drawing, clay work, and LEGO® Based Therapy, approaches that are playful in delivery but clinically purposeful in intent.

Psychotherapy is a more in-depth therapeutic approach focused on developing a deeper understanding of issues, patterns of behaviour, and ourselves. It is often a longer-term process, lasting several months or years. The focus is on uncovering and addressing underlying issues that may be contributing to mental health concerns, relationship problems, and more.

Psychotherapists may use a variety of techniques and modalities depending on their training, such as psychodynamic therapy, gestalt therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Schema Therapy, or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and sometimes somatic or expressive therapies, to help clients explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in a safe and supportive environment.

Trauma therapy may include the use of a variety of memory reprocessing modalities like Brainspotting, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing), EFT (Emotion Focussed Therapy) and/or parts work, like IFS (Internal Family Systems). These are all things you can google and get a feel for if you want to. However, you do not need to know whether counselling or psychotherapy is best for you before you start, or what type of modalities you want to use that can be something that is worked on together in your initial consult, and over time.

At SJP Wellbeing we are highly trained, experienced and degree-qualified. We undertake extensive and ongoing professional development in a wide variety of techniques and modalities to make sure that no matter what it is that you are dealing with, we remain adaptive to your needs, being person-first at ALL times. It’s our job to manage the space and to facilitate your journey, but you are in control of where we go and how we go there.

Our therapists have a range of specialties and experience, on purpose so that we are never using a one-size-fits-all approach, our initial consultations are aimed at discovering enough about who you are and what you’re dealing with that we can work on making sure that not only do we use the right modalities, but that you are with the right therapist for you.

At SJP Wellbeing we use a holistic family approach recognising the need to support the whole family system for therapeutic change.
